Cleaning
Cleaning your trainer is important to ensure your bearings rotate smoothly. Dirt and lint can build up between the tang and bearing causing an increase in friction.
Regular cleaning for small amounts of particulate:
- Slide the corner of a piece of paper between the tang and bearing.
- Make a few swipes while going around the pivot, you will need to rotate the handles to be able to swipe the full circumference of the pivot.
- The tolerance between the tang and bearing are not much larger then a piece of paper, any debris caught underneath will be pushed out by the paper.
- Additionally, you can dip the paper in isopropyl alcohol to help remove any oily buildup.
Cleaning large amounts of dirt:
If you use your trainer outdoors, you may end up dropping it in dirt or sand. Should you get a large amount of dirt inside the pivot you may need to wash your trainer with water.
While washing the pivot is safe, there are a few things to note.
- Do not use soap, soap may degrade the bearings, run the pivot under flowing water until all the dirt/sand has been removed.
- After washing the pivot you should use the paper technique to get any remaining particulate out and remove any water remaining in the pivot.
- Re-apply oil after washing, you should follow our oiling process here.
Disassembling the pivot mechanism in order to clean it is not recommended and may cause damage as the components are precisely fitted together during assembly.
